As I was going through my old files I found these pictures from my last semester at CSUF. This was a senior project assigned by one of my Graphic Design professors, the project was to re-design CD packaging for any album that I chose. I chose J-Dilla’s classic album “Donuts.” That album meant a lot to me at the time and I thought I’d give it a shot.

As I look back I would’ve probably gone about it differently, but hey, it’s not so shabby either way. I took the name “Donuts” in a literal sense and designed around that. I imagined the CD being at a Best Buy and wanted to design something that would stand out to consumers. It’s design is very modern and doesn’t speak much about the music, but that was done intentionally. The album was J Dilla’s last before his passing and strikes an emotional chord inside anyone that has ever listened to it (or at least everyone i’ve spoken too). So aside from the obvious donut box I figured i’d let the music speak for itself.

Inside the booklet I included a few quotes from J Dilla’s mother and a picture of him. Check it out below.

…oh yea…after doing this a fellow classmate told me that this idea had already been done!…Weak! The Simpson’s…who would’ve known?? LOL. I guess I should’ve done my research before. Starving, sleepless, finals…that’s all I have to say.

Anyway, here’s the Simpson’s version.
